Beta report: The new 3-versus-3 mode in Guilty Gear Strive is chaotic, hard to read, probably not to be taken too seriously… and is a total blast

In this video you can see what Arc has in mind for the 3v3 mode, ideally. It’s not what happens when you play it for the very first time with a bunch of randos.
The other weekend Arc System Works beta tested a new 6-player, 3vs3 game mode in the typically 2-player, 1 vs 1 fighting game Guilty Gear Strive. It was messy: so messy, in fact, that I couldn’t put it down.
Surprisingly, a recent team tourney for Isuka at Mikado arcade, a noted GG hot spot. Footage speaks for itself.
It’s quite surprising to see Guilty Gear return to the team-play experiment after an infamous history with the format. 20 years ago Guilty Gear Isuka (Hawk, for some reason!) tried to push the series towards 2-on-2 team battles, in imitation of the popular (in Japanese arcades) Gundam Vs series. But Gundam was built from the ground up with team play in mind, and 4-player Guilty Gear was more like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole: consider a 2D fighting game where you have to press a “turn” button every time you want to face the opposite direction. Players reasonably hated it, and the concept was abandoned for future GG games. Until now!
